Sharon Blaney and Missi Johnson Obtain Certification as Lactation Counselors
NATCHEZ, Miss. –October 11, 2018 – The Certified Lactation Counselor® (CLC) designation from The Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice, Inc. is recognized as the premier national certification in lactation management. Merit Health Natchez is proud to announce the certification has been awarded to two, long-termed nurses in our Women’s Health Center, Sharon Blaney and Missi Johnson.
“Sharon and Missi earned this certification to provide clinical breastfeeding counseling and management support to breastfeeding families,” said Liz Rogillio, RN and Director of the Women’s Health Center at Merit Health Natchez. “We are fortunate to have this expertise on our staff, and I commend them for the time and commitment they put forth to bring this expertise to our patients,” concluded Liz.
As a Certified Lactation Counselor®, these two employees have obtained the knowledge and skills to educate, counsel, and support families with complex breastfeeding situations; use counseling skills and techniques that are supportive to breastfeeding mothers and babies; and assess for, monitor, and evaluate physical conditions that predispose mothers and babies to a complex breastfeeding experience.
In addition to helping mothers who deliver at the hospital, breastfeeding classes are offered throughout the year, as well as a Breastfeeding Support Group that meets monthly at the hospital. The support group helps mothers and babies learn from a certified lactation nurse and other moms about their own successes and challenges with breastfeeding. For more information on these classes, visit the events page.
