NATCHEZ, Miss. –October 20, 2020 – Merit Health Natchez today announced that Registered Nurse Emily Moak has been selected to receive its Nursing Excellence Award.
This peer-nominated award, created in honor of 2020 being the “Year of the Nurse,” and in recognition of the critical role nurses have played in treating patients throughout the COVID pandemic, was open to qualifying RNs and LPNs working in a direct patient care position who consistently demonstrate characteristics synonymous with nursing excellence.
Emily was chosen from numerous nominations for her outstanding contributions in the areas of exceptional nursing and critical thinking skills, as well as her passion and commitment to her patients and co-workers.
“Our hospital is fortunate to have many outstanding nurses like Emily among its ranks. Nurses who deliver exemplary care, compassion and service, and who understand the importance of teamwork and mentoring others,” said Lee Hinson, Chief Nursing Officer at Merit Health Natchez. Suzanne Price, Nursing Director for the Intensive Care and Step down Units, believes Emily epitomized exceptional nursing. “The COVID pandemic did not create exceptional nursing in Emily; it just helped reveal and enhance her amazing attributes even more,” said Suzanne.
“With so much focus this year on the selfless efforts of front line heroes like Emily, we are pleased to acknowledge the important contributions of our nursing professionals. Emily turned the unknowns of this virus into her passion and became a leader during this crisis and a true champion of promoting healthcare in our community,” added Lance Boyd, CEO of Merit Health Natchez.
Emily joined Merit Health Natchez in July 2013 and after working three years on the medical-surgical floors, Emily moved to the specialty unit of Intensive Care. She embraced the teaching and coaching of others to help her become an exceptional ICU nurse. As the pandemic sieged upon our hospital, her thirst for knowledge, ability to adapt easily to change and eagerness to master any new procedures helped her turn the unknowns of this virus into her passion. Emily became a leader during this crisis.
In addition to receiving the Nursing Excellence Award itself, Emily received a cash prize and quintessential book on nursing, written by Florence Nightingale in 1859, that remains relevant to today’s modern nursing attitudes and skills.
